Women’s mountain biking clothing is relatively new to the industry. Ladies deserve to look good when they hit the mountains and many companies are just now catching on to this idea. And some companies are taking it more seriously than others, giving us a reason to be grateful that the seed has been planted and enjoy/critic the clothing as it makes it way from design to production.

There are a few companies that have boldly moved into the women’s mountain biking clothing industry and taken it a step farther then the average curly cues and light blue. One such company is Sombrio. Not only has the company been producing mountain bike clothes for women, it’s designers have explored the everyday living concept and created a ‘life’ line to compliment its powerful, female, cycling line.

This Vancouver based company has brought fashion to ladies on their bike, but has also shown that it doesn’t need to end there. With a full line up of every day shorts, t-shirts, jackets and hoodies, all inspired by the same whimsical, fun themes we see throughout their biking line, Sombrio ‘Life’ makes transitioning off the bike that much easier.

The Bread Tank and Road Trip Shorts (as seen above), for example, are cute and sure beat wearing your stinky cycling clothes out after a ride! Plus, the same high quality materials and design used in Sombrio’s ‘Bike’ line are seen in the ‘Life’ line as well.

So if the ‘Life’ line is this good, what does the ‘Bike’ line entail?

The Zinnia Shorts are everything you could want in a pair of mountain biking shorts. They feature the vital four-way stretch material, with oversized belt loops and velcro secured pockets. They do not include a chamois, but are designed to be worn with one under if you feel so inclined.

And to go on top?

The Zin Jersey –> This seamless, moisture wicking, anti-bacterial jersey combines what you want in a jersey with what you need in one. All the technical jargon means you will be dry, bacteria free and comfortable while you ride. But the design, stripes and colors mean you will be thrilled to see yourself when your friend posts the pictures from last weekends trip online.

And these are just a few examples! Visit Sombrio’s website to see the entire line!

From Hood River, Oregon, Decide 2 Ride and KoKi Bags deliver commuter bags that have flare and are wonderfully user friendly, with important features you will wonder how you lived without.

It all starts at the bottom…

One of the most unique and important features of Koki bags are their rubber bases.

The material used in the base is similar to that which we see in “Crocs”. It is extremely durable, lightweight and weather resistant. The best part, in my opinion, is that this rubber base gives the rest of the bag the ability to be completely freestanding! I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to have a commuter pannier that I can take off my bike and just set on the ground while I fill it up, take things out of it, or have it out of the way while I lock up my bike. This freestanding ability virtually eliminates the hassle of trying to find something to lean the bag on while you prep yourself and your bike for the ride to or from work or the store. And because the base is waterproof you don’t need to worry about the bag or its contents getting wet. Genius!

Bring a KoKi along for the ride!

The KoKi bags are equipped with sturdy clips that can attach to just about any back rack, without difficulty. And these two little clips are all you need, over speed bumps, through pot holes and along bumpy roads, this bag won’t rattle or even come close to falling off! You will be able to safely transport all your goods no matter the road condition or your riding style.

Once you’re at your destination your KoKi bag converts into a shoulder bag with the simple ‘click’ of a strap. Both sides of the bag have strap attachments that give this bag more versatility than just your standard pannier.

With the rubber sole, freestanding design, clips and detachable straps, you might thing that KoKi has thought of it all, but there is one more thing this Oregon based company has considered in its design of bags… Rain… So when the elements start coming down simply slip on your KoKi’s rain fly and concentrate on getting home safe. Phew, it looks like KoKi really DID think of everything!

KoKi Giveaway!

Here is your chance to win your very own sweet treat of a commuter bag! The KoKi Bagaboo (as pictured throughout this article) and its handlebar counterpart, the Budgie are up for grabs. The Bagaboo is big enough to carry groceries, school books and work necessities, while still being sleek and well fitting on the your bike. The Budgie is a nice handlebar complement to the Bagaboo. It is smaller, with some internal pockets to organize your phone, wallet and other personal items. It includes the hardware to install it on your bike, and like all the KoKi products, it has a rubber sole and is totally free standing. These two bags have all the wonderful KoKi features, but also include panels of woven, recycled material. As you can see in the picture above, the front panel is actually composed of scrap paper that is treated and then woven to create this awesome, unique look! Reuse and Recycle, Thanks KoKi! Check out KoKi’s other recycled produces.

These two bags are valued at over $125.

ALSO! How about TWO giveaways? KoKi has also provided a Mogi. Accurately described as a ‘skinny smartphone pocket’ this little bag can easily be added to your commuter bike, or even your bike that you lead your group ride with. Your phone slides into the see-through sleeve from the back, or inside. The top lid is welded making it is completely waterproof, so your phone is safe. The bag itself can hold a gel or two and your keys: the necessities. Compact and sleek is what the Mogi is aiming to achieve!

The Christmas tree is decorated and the stocking are hung … and we await the big day!! Is your shopping complete? Have you gotten everything you need to for the cyclist or future cyclist on your list? Cycle & Style hopes that our 2011 “Buying Guide” articles have helped to introduce or reintroduce you to some of our favorite cycling items that we have come across this past year. To finish up our series of articles for this season, we are introducing you to gifts for under the tree. And … to help Santa out … some gifts for the stockings.

Merry Christmas to all of our C&S Readers!! May it be a Wonderful Holiday Season for You and Yours!!

Now before you go for the things to be wrapped and put under the tree, let’s talk about the ornaments on the tree. Well … I (Beth) love a “theme” & when I wrap my Christmas presents I love to find an ornament to go with “my theme” and add it to my package. In this case – BIKES … BICYCLES!!! I found this cute pink girly ornament & lots of others on this really great website – Cafe Press (bike ornaments). Go and check them out!!

Let’s move from hanging those ornaments to “displaying” your awards!! How many of you have a tangle of medals hanging around the house on a bedroom door or off of an old trophy and you aren’t quite sure what to do with them. Allied Steel Fabricators, the parent company of Allied Medal Displays, is a small fabrication business based in Redmond, WA and they have the “Medal Display” for you. The fabrication that the company is built on is high end retail displays but they also do some structural work as well as high end handrail. A few years back, they purchased a laser to assist in operations and their CAD designer came up with the original prototype for the medal displays. Since that time, the design changed a bit and the popularity kept growing. Now the displays are not just made for their family and friends, but are on the company’s website and in several small running store locations.

These “Medal Displays” are very unique!! They would be great in a wrapped gift &/or cute coming out of a stocking!! Allied Medal Displays has many to choose from or you can have one customized. Of course C&S was looking for the “Cycling” &/or “”Triathlon” one for our readers … and we found it (them)!!! Along with many others – Running, Marathon, Sports, Customize, Female & Male. The BEST thing about Christmas, C&S and our new friends @ Allied Medal Displays is that one lucky reader will be getting the “Triathlon Medal Display” (that’s pictured) in their stocking this year!! MORE DETAILS TO COME AT THE BOTTOM ON THIS ARTICLE!!

Once inside, I was so excited to see all of the “bike” stuff … all in one store!! Tribute Sport sells all of their items in the Earth Studio store and on their website. Not only did they have jewelry, but they had bike ornaments, wall art, bike wind chains, bike clocks, business card holders, bike frames, keychains, key hooks, bookends and purses. WoW … very unique things!! As an avid mountain biker, I loved these items because they had “mountain bike” stuff – not just road bike stuff. (Don’t get me wrong … I like road bike items, but I tend to find more of these items as a choice over mountain bike items.) Tribute Sport artisans make all of their pieces in their workshop in Moab.
What are you going to get the mountain bikers in your family this holiday season?

Although the hills and mountains are dusted with snow, the once mountain biker paradise is still ever present in the mind of those who live to push peddles during the warmer seasons. The mountain biker in your family hasn’t forgotten about their passion for the sport, so get them something to tease their senses throughout the winter months!

For the Bike…

GORE Ride On Shifting Cables

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to have completely, and I mean, COMPLETELY, smooth shifting? Dream no farther. The GORE Ride On system makes shifting silky smooth, make each shift precise and exact. I installed this system on my bike and instantly felt the difference, no more wrenching of my left thumb to try and get the front rings to change. The key to the system? According to GORE their “cables are completely protected from mud, dirt and the elements by continuous liners and GRUB™ Seals”. This system includes a cable coating that is durable and virtually eliminates cable friction, AKA: No friction=better, more precise shifting, which= a smile on your face!

MSRP: varies, order on Competitive Cyclist

The Specialized S3 MT does all of that, and does it without looking like a salad bowl on your head! The venting on this helmet will make you wonder how you got by without it, and it will feel virtually weightless once on your head. The visor is removable which gives you an option on whether you want it on or not. The buckle is low profile and easy to adjust and the adjustment dial will make the helmet fit perfectly. Give the gift of safety to the mountain bikers in your family, or if you love cruising the trails, put it on YOUR wish list!

The nose pieces are totally adjustable which lets you decide where you want them to sit. But they also can be adjusted around the ears, so you have complete control to customize them as you see fit. The best part? The price point. All of the performance line glasses are between $39.99-$49.99 so you can get a great pair of glasses without breaking the bank!

So it’s official, winter is upon us. The snow is flying and the temperature is consistently chilly. What does this mean for us and our bikes? Time to hang up the towel until next year? NO; the answer to year round biking can be found in the perfect cycling JACKET. But of course, it can be difficult to find the perfect jacket because there are so many options to choose from. Lightweight, breathable, packable, waterproof, windproof, heavy duty, etc… What do all of these descriptions mean and what are they actually going to do for us? Get some answers about the world of jackets in this buying guide, hopefully it helps you match your needs so you can exactly what you want.

Buying Guide

What are you going to be using the jacket for? This should be the first thing you ask yourself when you decide you want to make a purchase. I have found a great way to answer this question is to think about it when you are riding. It may sound basic but if you are consistently riding canyons, for example, you may find you feel great on the way up with just a long sleeved jersey, but are chilled to the bone on the decent. This would suggest that you need something that is easy to put in the back pocket of your jersey for the accent (packable), and able to break the wind for the decent (windproof). So before you do anything think about what you want this jacket for.

There IS a difference between a cycling jacket and regular jacket. The attention to details that biking companies put into jackets make your life much easier, and more comfortable. Here are some of the differences to keep in mind as you look at cycling jackets:

Longer in the back than the front (aka drop tail hemline). This cut is designed for the way our bodies are positioned on the bike; bent at the waist, leaning forward. If you hopped on the bike with a regular jacket you would soon find the small of your back freezing and exposed!

SUGOI's Hot Shot Jersey is a well-fitting winter softshell with dense warmth.

Reflective piping. This is the metallic looking strips that are usually stitched into the seams of cycling jackets. You will notice that as soon as the surrounding area becomes dark, if light is directed at these strips they actually put off a surprising glow that is attention grabbing. Reflective piping can help keep you safe when riding on the road at night.

Pockets. Cycling jackets should definitely have pockets, but don’t be alarmed if you find them in different places than your typical ski jacket. Back pockets are great for road and commuting storage (either top access or side access with a zipper). A breast pocket is a plus, you might find they are good for smaller items such as keys and cell phones. And regular front pockets are great for hands when off the bike (be careful not to put anything in them if they do not have zippers, things might go bouncing out!)

Waist cord and wrist cuffs. Make sure there is some way of tightening the jacket around the waist and at the sleeves to prevent, minimize the airflow under the jacket while on your ride. Of course there are many different options for this; velcro, elastic or zippers. Choose what you like, but make sure this is a feature; you will be grateful for it when temperatures drop suddenly. Conversely, the loosening of the waist cord or wrist cuffs can help cool you, if you are too warm.

Novara Headwind Bike Jacket: this soft-shell bike jacket blocks wind and resists water, making it ideal for a mixed bag of riding weather

So what does all the jacket ‘jargon’ mean? After you understand the basic fit of a cycling jacket, you then move on to the catch words of certain jackets…

Waterproof vs. Water Resistent: Plan and simply, waterproof means the jacket should be able to withstand a downpour, keeping you dry. Water resistant means the jacket can withstand the effects of rain, snow or sleet, but is not going to keep you dry in these conditions for an extended period of time.

Windproof: Impervious to wind.

Packable: The ability for the jacket to fold or bunch into a very small size so that you may ‘pack’ it along where ever you go. Usually jackets are labeled ‘packable’ of they have a small pocket that they can actually be packed into.

Breathable: The way the jacket transfers your body heat away from you. This is seen in a couple of different ways; zippered vents, sleeves of the jackets actually zipping off, and certain materials that are actually designed to let your body out while still keeping the elements out. Breathability is very important! If you don’t find something that is breathable you will feel like you are wrapped in plastic wrap and will be dripping with sweat by the end of your ride.

The water-resistant Novara Conversion bike jacket converts to a vest in a flash, handling with ease everything from foggy mornings to sunny afternoons.

Review of Novara Jackets

With all of this new information about jackets under our belt lets take a look at some new 2012 Novara (REI brand) women’s specific jackets. (All the pictures throughout this article are the Novara women’s jackets).

The Novara Headwind Bike Jacket (as seen above). This jacket has forever changed the way I think about comfortable commuting. It is cozy warm, stretchy, and breathable (yeah jargon!). The front panels are windproof up to 35 miles per hour which is is hugely important for everyone who commutes. The back and side panels are made from a fabric that wicks moisture away, which is key to staying warm. It also has easily accessible pockets both on the front and on the back, my one complaint would be that the front pockets don’t zip, meaning you can’t put anything in them. The Headwind is finished off with a detachable hood that can fit under or over your helmet. This jacket is great for those who commute or road ride in chilly weather and want a mid layer or an outer layer! (MSRP: $99.50)

The Novara Express 2.0 (as seen above). This is your handy waterproof, lightweight, zip venting companion. You will be happy you had it when you find yourself in an unexpected rain shower or on a foggy morning. Novara does not cut any corners with this waterproof jacket, all the zippers are water sealed and all the vents are protected so you don’t get wet when you are trying to cool off. The drop tail hemline and tight fitting cuffs prevent the weather from getting between you and your ride. Don’t get caught on potentially wet days without the Express 2.0! (MSRP: $89.50)

The Novara Conversion (as seen above). This just might be one of the best ‘everything-in-one’ jackets! It is water resistant, very lightweight and can convert into a vest with a quick zip of a zipper. The cuffs and the hem bunch with elastic and the mesh lined back keeps you cool and sweat free. There is also reflective piping along the back to help with visibility, of course the bright yellow also helps with being seen! (MSRP: $79.50)

Note: Although REI provides jackets for review, they do not reimburse or give product to keep in exchange for product reviews.

Water Bottles for the Purist

Specialized has come up with new technology inspired by nature’s lotus leaf: Purist, which keeps your water as pure as when drinking from a glass, with all the advantages of a flexible bottle. Silicon Dioxide is added to the polymer structure of the inner surface of the bottle, forming a glass-like barrier that prevents odors, stains, and mold from permanently attaching to the inside surface of the bottle … so all you taste is the water. Wouldn’t this be the perfect bottle for the road cyclist on your list?

Along with this, Specialized has developed two different cap options for their bottles. The MoFlo and the Watergate deliver water more efficiently, ensuring ease of hydration. The MoFlo delivers 50% more water than leading bottles. It’s easy to open, effortless to use and leak proof when closed. The Watergate features the self-sealing Heart Valve, delivering a high rate of flow with a leak proof design, even when the valve is open.

A “Clearview Strip” on the side of each bottle allows you to peak down at your bottle and get a quick look at how much remaining water you have. Purist is available in the 22 oz. and 26 oz. sizes. The squeezable bottle with the screw cap and large opening for all your ice and drink mix requirements makes drinking a snap. These water bottles by Specialized can be customized for a bike event or any function that you might have.

Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus! (More Sweet Rides!)

Not all road bikes are the same. We know that components and carbon frames come in various levels of quality which influence not only the price of the bike, but also its lightness, smooth shifting and easy handling. One of the most important factors in a road bike is making sure it fits you well. For many women, that means checking out the women’s specific bikes which will fit a large majority of women. A few bike companies have particularly nailed it when it comes to making great road bikes for women. One of these great bike companies is Specialized and one of the unique things they offer to women are the two great road bikes they designed: the Amira and the Ruby. They recognize there are women who are speedy sprinters who need a bike designed to be very light & fast and then there are those riders who possess super-human stamina and need a bike that will be comfortable even after a long day. Specialized designed the two women’s specific bikes to please each.

Specialized’s Ruby has a carbon frameset designed for long-distance riding. The frame and fork are made to help dampen road vibration and the slightly relaxed geometry is designed to be a plush ride that will take you the distance. From the freedom of the open road to ultra-distance events, Ruby riders want to cover long distances in control and comfort, but they still demand quick and efficient bikes. These enthusiast road riders want to enjoy every minute on their bikes, so they appreciate the benefits of carbon and a high-quality spec package.

But if racing is the goal, Specialized just came out with the 2012 Amira, a high-end road frame designed to be light and fast. The bike’s stiffness makes for a very responsive bike that transfers your energy into speed. When the designers set out to make the Amira, they designed it with the elite female racers of HTC-Highroad team in mind. It’s not just a feminized Tarmac(Specialized’s men’s racing bike), the Amira is uniquely designed for women from the ground up. The S-Works Amira Sl-4 is the lightest, stiffest and fastest bike around.

The Specialized Ruby comes in a variety of models and range of prices. The one above is the Ruby Elite Compact (MSRP $2,750). The Specialized Amira comes in a half-dozen models with various price points. The beautiful Amira below is the top-of-the-line, the S-Works Amira SL-4 mid Compact (MSRP is $8000). (Questions about component groups? We break it down for you here!)

This beautiful shoe could even make Carrie Underwood swoon. The Fi’zi:k R3 Donna women’s road shoe is a beautifully made high-end cycling shoe. Lance Armstrong, now a part owner of Honey Stinger, wanted to introduce one of his favorite snacks from his European racing years to American cyclists and thus, the Honey Stinger Organic Waffle was created. The original honey flavor was so popular that a vanilla and strawberry version have been created as well.

DZ Nuts Heat

DZ Nuts Heat embrocation cream make great winter gifts as these creams can be used for keeping your legs warm while riding in cold and wet conditions, in other words, for the typical North American weather conditions we’ll have over the next 5 months. Embrocation Creams have been used by cyclists and cyclo-cross riders as they ride, race and train during the bad weather seasons of Belgium. Cyclists can ride in their shorts and actually be warmer with embrocation ointments on a cold and very wet day than they might while wearing wet tights. The heating qualities of these Belgian cycling ointments have earned them the nickname of “Belgian knee warmers.” The heat from Zabriskie’s cream comes from capsicum (a.k.a. cayenne pepper) which has been used as a warming ingredient in herbal remedies for years.* One thing about capsicum is that it can take a little while to warm up. You don’t want to do it just before you head out the door for a cold, rainy ride, instead rub it on about 30 minutes before. The variations in heat mean that high heat will be “too hot” for some temperature ranges, but it is the most long-lasting of the three, so it is perfect for a 5-hour ride. (More info on DZ Nuts Heat here)

InHeatMixology:

Blend instructions when using Dz-Nuts InHeat:

Low is obviously the lowest heat for brisk fall days.

Use Medium for colder days, possibly as a substitute for tights. Use on knees as substitute for knickers.

Reserve High for very cold days, and cyclocross racing when you would normally wear tights. Many experienced embrocation users will use Medium on total leg and supplement with High on the knees

Bar Mitts

With the winter comes the time when we need to pay extra attention to keeping our extremities warm when we ride. Having always myself suffered from chilly fingers throughout the winter due to wind chill and dipping temps, I felt my biking was doomed when the snow flew. I tried gloves but couldn’t seem to regulate the temperature, my hands were either sweating or freezing… With the discovery of Bar Mitts my outlook on winter riding has completely changed for the better. These neoprene mitts, once pulled over your handlebars block the wind, completely, and prevent frost bitten fingers from ending your ride early. They are very easy to put on your bike, just pull them around your handlebars and zip them closed and they DO NOT effect your shifting or breaking whatsoever. Bar Mitts come in different sizes and colors and there is even a model for your flat bar commuter or mountain bike. PERFECT gift idea for the winter biking enthusiasts in your family! As Bar Mitts say, “Don’t Let Cold Hands Keep You Inside Anymore!”

Who said that using lights on a bike for safety couldn’t be fun? MonkeyLectric has looked at night visibility in the whole new way. The concept uses the spinning motion of the wheel and one stationary piece of lighting equipment to make the wheel become alive with bright, eye-catching designs and colors!

So how does it work?

I thought the same thing when I looked at the packaging, but as soon as I took out the instructions and examined the pieces, I put it on my bike with little to no effort.

The whole concept behind the Monkey Light Mini is a piece of hardware that attaches to the end of your spokes (closest to the rim of the wheel). This piece is then attached to a battery pack that zip-ties to your hub. Make sure everything is securely fastened to either the spokes or the hub in order to prevent uneven weight distribution. Once the everything is in place you simply turn on the hardware and get the wheel spinning! Not only does the light put off a bright color, you can choose one of the 8 themes to light up the night. Hearts, rainbows, block patters, etc… If you can’t pick on theme you can have the light cycle through all of them as you cruse around!

The Monkey Light Mini did not make my wheel feel unbalanced or off centered at all. It was nothing but smooth sailing! Not to mention the extra bit of light I had, brightening the road right at my wheel. After making a few commutes, I found myself just riding around, excited about both the light and the looks from curious people. I was even stopped at a stop light to explain the crazy colors coming from my wheel!

What an awesome gift idea for those you know who commute at night or just love to find exciting new things for their bike! MonkeyLectric makes other cool products too, like the Monkey Light M133 which is the original, full-spokes light kit!

Since the beginning, mountain biking clothing has been designed for function, namely its ability to withstand falls, take on regular mud-spattering and be comfortable. Loose-fitting shirts and drab colored baggy shorts made up a guy’s typical mountain biking wardrobe and at first, women just wore and adapted men’s clothes in smaller sizes. Thank Heaven things have changed! Comfort and performance are still needed, but fashion is making inroads into mountain biking clothing and we are more than happy to put the spotlight on those companies who do it so well.

ZOIC Clothing is one such company which stands out for going that extra mile in bringing together good fit, function and performance and some stylish looks. The result is apparel for the trail that is durable, has the technical performance an active athlete needs and a touch of fashion. ZOIC uses unique fabrics such as plaids and houndstooth, while also adding a few fanciful prints to several pieces in their clothing line. It is just those little touches that help to set a woman apart from looking like just one of the guys. Clothing companies ride a fine line when making women’s clothes to please avid mountain bikers. They want the same high quality features the men’s clothing enjoys, but they don’t want cycling clothing companies to just “shrink it and pink it” (to use a trite saying). They want performance clothing that was made to fit a woman which is stylish yet subtle in its femininity. ZOIC is hitting that mark.

ZOIC not only makes clothes for the mountain trails, but also for the urban commuter, casual cyclist and indoor fitness buff. The shorts, capris, knickers and skirts have inner chamois liners which can be removed to make a smooth transition from mountain trail to town life. Having multi-function clothing has always been a part of a smart traveler’s wardrobe, but in these economic times, it’s great to have cycling clothing that can become a part of one’s off-the-bike wardrobe as well. One can easily remove the chamois liner from the plaid Damsel skirt, pair it with a sweater, grey leggings and some ballet flats and voila! It’s a great-looking outfit for going out on the town!

We also love companies in the cycling industry who give back and who help support cycling causes and ZOIC is a great community supporter who supports associations such as its local cycling groups and big ones such as IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) and organizations such as Trips for Kids and Biking for a Better World.

ZOIC’s newest jersey, the long-sleeved Ambrosia jersey is being offered as a prize by ZOIC for Cycle & Style readers! This jersey was Stephanie’s absolute favorite (see her complete review below) and is shown in several of these photos. It’s a half-zip jersey that is great on its own or worn as an outer or even mid-layer. The front hand pockets are unique for a cycling jersey and it has a flattering straight form-fitting cut. The Ambrosia jersey offered as a giveaway is gray and comes in four sizes small through extra-large. (MSRP is $55) The winner of the giveaway may choose her size!

Stephanie’s Review of ZOIC’s Naveah Shorts, Joie de Vie Tee & Ambrosia Jersey

I love the Joie de Vie tee; it is basic and extremely breathable with some really nice feminine features, which is great for women’s mountain biking. First, it is a beautiful deep purple which is a great stand-alone color or layering piece. It has a V-neck, adding to the breathability, and includes some snaps on the sleeves, giving this basic concept T-shirt a little more flare! It also has some venting up by the shoulders, a cute accent with some functionality. To finish it off, it includes a small media pocket, my one complaint is that it might be a little too small, I can hardly get my I-Pod in it. (MSRP is $44)

Elizabeth shows off ZOIC's newest jersey, the long-sleeved Ambrosia, paired with their Naveah shorts and Joie de Vie tee.

The black Ambrosia jersey is my favorite part of the whole set. It is stretchy, breathable and light, perfect for mountain biking. It is made to go with the purple shirt in the set and has some matching accents, but I have used it several times on its own or with a different tank. I appreciate is functionality. Not only does this piece look great with its purple counterpart out on the trails, it also can be used in all types of cycling! I have worn it in spin class as a warm-up, outer layer, and I have also worn it under a thicker jacket for some commuting. It has a kangaroo pocket in the front for your hands (it doesn’t zip so I didn’t put any keys or cell phone in it) and it bunches at the elbow, which gives it extrmovement. Its also flattering with its form fitting cut, making it a sporty, cute layer to just wear out to coffee!

The Navaeh shorts are designed with the mountain biking chick in mind and ZOIC really hits that mark. The material is some of the lightest I have encountered in the mountain bike clothing industry. It is thin, but not flimsy, making movement natural and easy. The length is down to the knees giving the protection needed to tear down trails without worrying about getting caught up on some bushes along the way. Like the other three pieces in the set, the shorts really do a nice job accenting the complete outfit, but I have also used them with other tops and they look great. The removable chamois is a must-have, it makes the shorts more versatile and easier to clean. All the pockets are water sealed which is especially important for the media pocket! (MSRP: $74)

VERY nice job ZOIC, awesome looking and performing mountain biking/cycling gear for women!

British-made Rapha cycling clothing is known for their intense functionality and their simple elegance. Rapha’s classic style is subdued, well-fitting and fashionable without being trendy. It’s nuanced: many of the pieces have color on color markings which don’t scream the brand name. The clothing is favored for its high performance, comfort and attention to detail. It may be a joke that some people have engraved on their Road Id wrist band, “Don’t cut my shorts – they’re Rapha!” But the truth is the brand has loyal, dedicated fans/customers.

A little cycling history is found just inside the jacket

There is a whiff of cycling nostalgia inherent in the Rapha designs. Simon Mottram, the company’s founder is an avid cycling buff who was inspired by the “golden years” of Continental road racing in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He liked the simple aesthetics of simple stripes and rich solid colors and has combined those retro looks with high quality materials and modern technological touches to form the Rapha line, which was first introduced in 2004. Six years later, Rapha unveiled their women’s line of high performance road riding pieces with input from a London-based women’s team who continue to put the clothing to the test in extreme conditions.

Rapha’s CEO, Simon Mottram, said of the range: “We had so many requests from women who love Rapha clothing and wanted the same but with a women-specific fit. This was our inspiration and we are offering something befitting the class and style of the sport and the women who are involved in it. We realized early on that the women’s range should be an extension of the men’s one and we’ve avoided girly colors and floral prints. A passion for road cycling is at the core of everything Rapha does and as with the men’s clothing each product will contain a story label inspired by the legends and character of the sport.”

Susy is wearing Rapha's women's 3/4 length bib shorts, the very versatile winter cycling jersey and Belgian-style winter hat w/ ribbed ear guards designed to keep out ice-cold winds

One could have a little sticker shock when looking at the prices. Rapha is an expensive line of cycling clothing (although not as expensive as Assos), but they pride themselves on their quality and style. Rapha always uses high quality materials: lightweight, windproof and water resistant for their jackets, fabric with soft feel and high tech wicking ability for the jersey, and merino-rich warmth for the winter cycling jersey.

Rapha zipper details on Women’s Wind Jacket

Care is taken that the Rapha clothes will last for years and garments are constructed with reinforcements in places that typically wear first such as wrist cuffs on the jacket, sleeves & shoulder seam areas. Zippers are high quality and care is taken that jersey zippers will never touch your bare skin. The jersey has a soft fabric sleeve between you and the zipper. Waist cords with friction locks are in both the jacket and the jerseys and can easily be adjusted during a ride to keep in or release body heat as needed. The shorts use top quality pads (designed especially for women) and have a panel construction. They are designed with an emphasis on cut and comfort for the road cyclist who plans on putting in hundreds of miles on their bike: the front panel is doubled over rather than stitched to prevent digging in while riding and the seams are positioned to prevent chafing and finished with soft, flat-lock stitching. The shorts are cut long in the leg and are much more flattering than most shorts. (Personal note here: they are my hands-down favorite shorts even after several century plus rides.) The arm warmers have a brushed fleece inner and soft gripper tape to hold them securely in place. They are finished with contrast piping and color-on-color logos.

A few of our favorites from Rapha:

Women’s Wind Jacket: a great three-season cycling jacket

It is very lightweight, yet is able to block the wind and is water resistant enough to handle a sudden shower. Note the little details that set Rapha apart: a soft fleece chin guard to prevent the zip from chafing (it is also on the back of the collar.) The full-length zipper is stylishly and assymetrically placed. It’s structured to effectively keep out the water with a reverse coil, which means the back of the zipper faces outward. The long-cut back of the jacket drops down far enough to keep off that spray of road grime and has been stitched to prevent the back from flapping up. A waistcord with friction locks makes it easily adjustable. The women’s Wind Jacket has a structured fit with stitched darts in the chest and a little wider fit at the hips. Reflective details are placed along the sleeves and the Rapha logo is reflective as well. It can be packed up in a small bundle and stowed away in a jersey pocket to be used as needed.

Women’s Classic Jersey

The classic jersey is exactly that: an understated look that is extremely versatile. It’s a high performance jersey that will be just as great in five years as it is when new. The full-length zip jersey is made from a soft high performance fabric that will effectively wick away sweat. The three back jersey pockets also feature an additional sleeve which will nicely hold a CO2 pump in the middle pocket. The right rear pocket has an eyelet to run headphone wires through. A semi-hidden 4th zipped wallet-sized pocket is accessed behind the left pocket. A set of complimentary cream-colored arm warmers for colder conditions is sold with the classic jersey.

Women’s ¾ Bib Shorts:

Rapha’s classic cycling bibs designed for women are made from durable fleece-backed fabric. The shorts have a high-rise front chest panel for additional support that uses a softer fabric than the leg panels. The back has large cut-away sections in the back to prevent overheating and high quality mesh fabric on the straps. A back pocket on the rear center bibs is placed to store small items. (The female -specific contoured pad is the same as the high quality one in the classic shorts.)

Look for the care instructions tucked within the pocket areas. Generally the care is similar to other cycling clothes: cold water machine wash, the shorts and jacket will need to be hung to dry but the jersey can be tumbled dry on a low heat setting.

RAPHA GIVEAWAY:

Highly versatile winter long-sleeved cycling jersey (in Blue w/ cream accents, size large)–Shown at left and sleeve detail below

Rapha’s versatile cycling jersey works as an outer- or mid-layer. Cut from a merino-rich material the soft and breathable jersey wicks moisture away from the skin quickly yet also maintains body heat in cold weather. This flattering jersey has a slim fit and is cut long in the back and arms for a better shape on the bike. The full-length zip has a lockdown puller and a soft fleece chin guard to prevent chafing. There are three main cargo pockets, with an inner pump sleeve and a zipped valuables pocket with O-ring puller to keep items dry and secure. (The gray-blue shade of this jersey is similar to the color of a lake on a cloudy day; it’s very subdued.)

Plus the winner will receive a pair of Rapha Over socks which combine a wind resistant, robust and flexible fabric with classic cycling style (size large)
