Keepin’ Cool with Polar Bottle (+ Giveaway)

A year ago Beth did a review of five great water bottles and one of the stand-out bottles for road cyclists was the Polar Bottle. This summer rides in 80-90 temperatures gave us another chance to contrast our regular plastic bottles with the Polar Bottles, observing how quickly the ice melted and the water became tepid in the plastic water bottle. At that rate, I could have made sun tea in the clear plastic water bottle. At the time, I had one Polar bottle which I depended on to stay cold in the first 60-90 minutes of the ride while I finished off the first bottle. It was so refreshing to drink water that was still icy-cold at that point. It’s due to the design of the Polar bottles: it has an insulating layer between two walls of plastic which keeps liquids cool twice as long as regular water bottles

We knew that we liked the way Polar Bottles kept our water cold and how neatly it fit into a standard water bottle cage on the bike, but it was when we stopped by their booth at this summer”s Outdoor Retailer Show that we had a chance to check out the great designs and colors of their bottles. It makes it easy to find one to match your style and look great on your bike. (We bought several!)

Polar Bottle just announced they wanted to make a small tribute as our country recognizes the tenth anniversary of 9/11 this week and so they have designed a bottle with a star-spangled flag graphic.  “We are always coming up with new limited edition bottle graphics,” said Judy Amabile, president of Product Architects. “Given the significance of 9/11, we thought our customers would like a patriotic bottle choice right now. And the back-to-school bottles are perfect for fall.” (Judy Amabile, an avid cyclist who lives in Boulder, Colorado, is the owner of Product Architects, Inc. which invented Polar Bottle.)

GIVE-AWAY!

Polar Bottle is offering a nice give-away to TWO Cycle & Style readers with a pair of Polar Bottles in the 20 oz and 24 oz sizes, one pair of the star-spangled flag graphic and one pair of the great-looking falling leaves design. To enter the Polar Bottle give-away, tell us about your perfect ride to see the best of autumn’s beauty in the comment section below. The TWO winners will be chosen on the last day of summer (Sept. 21) and we’ll send it off to them on the first day of fall (Sept. 22, 2011)!

  1. Early in the morning on a beautiful, (almost cool) sunny day with no wind!! Hardly any traffic and it was wonderful! The perfect time of year to ride is upon us!

  2. My best ride will be on September 11. I am competing in my first triathlon on this day of remembrance. I had bought my first real road bike this spring and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of speed, movement and the pure joy of exploring with my own body as the propeller! I live in New Mexico. It is hot! I get really, really thirsty and I’ve been seeing your bottles and would love to have them to make my hydration process all the more pleasant! Thanks!

Riding along the Great River Road – with the Mississippi River on one side and the bluffs filled with trees; their leaves turning the brilliant fall colors!

  4. I’d go for a ride from my home in DC, out to George Washington’s home along the Mount Vernon trail, and back. The leaves along the trail are lovely in fall, and DC’s hot summer temps have finally started to cool down. (Plus my birthday is September 20th and this would be a great present!)

  5. Since I have yet to seriously bike in the fall (i’m a newbie), my “dream” fall ride would be a nicely paved road that goes out into the country where there is little traffic. This particular area is in the Flint Hills of Kansas, so you get a combination of beautiful, rolling hills as well as plenty of trees along the road to enjoy the lovely colors of fall. I am hoping to do this ride either early in the morning with the sunrise or later in the evening with the sunset. Ah… I can’t wait:)

  6. riding the hilly hundred.the chill of the early morning descent the warm up of the climb out.all the fall colors.when ever i smell the outdoors after a rain it makes me think of the hilly.smells like fall.just a great time.

A crisp, fall day and I’m riding on my rural roads of Pennsylvania. I’m on my Moots Compact (aka “Wonder Bike”) and the wind is mild, the sun at my back. My body acclimates to the demand of the first climb that I affectionately call “the faith hill”, as it sits next to a local church! I finish the climb and I realize that I have that extra kick today…that inexplicable power that you get on some rides. It makes everything seem easier and allows your body to convert all of it’s energy into sheer power! This is what keeps me riding well into my fifth decade…

Riding Bingham Hill and Horsetooth Resevoir in the foothills of Fort Collins, CO — enjoying the beautiful scenery.

  9. In about two weeks I’m going to be riding to the University of Minnesota’s Arboretum to check out their apple hut and watch the trees turn colors.

  10. The Fish Lake Trail in Spokane, WA

  11. The perfect autumn ride: the weather has cooled off, the leaves are changing colors. While you are riding, you actually take a minute, to take a deep breath, and enjoy the beauty of fall.

  12. My first ride on a mountain bike in park city. The hardwork going up and the joy of flying downhill with a bike designed to absorb it all, I was and am hooked!

  13. Riding around the outskirts of our hometown (Issaquah/Redmond Wa) through farmlands and forested areas=beautiful!

  14. Riding through Old Town Louisville (CO) and seeing all the different trees and decorated houses.

  15. Any ride that I can do with my husband. It’s nice to get to do something together without any distractions but it’s even better that we can do something healthy.

My ideal ride would take place on a warm fall day with just a hint of chill in the air. I live in the midst of Oregon apple growing country and I would ride past the orchards, glowing in shades of red, orange and pink, stop at a farm stand to eat a crisp, freshly plucked apple, and enjoy ice-cold water from a Polar Bottle.

My perfect ride is with my mother and my sister. We have been riding together for more the 10 years and we have had so many fun fall adventures. The best autumn beauty is in our suburban neighborhood, the leaves are so beautiful and the air is so crisp and clean. I would love to get these water bottles, so my sister, mother and I could enjoy our ride and these Polar water bottles together.

  18. The perfect fall ride in our city is right along the River. The banks are home to tall trees and the color changes are gorgeous. The sound of streaming water and the cooler weather makes a bike ride along there perfect. My husband and I take the kiddos in the trailer and tag along, picnic lunch packed and just enjoying being together!
