Book Review: One Hour Workouts
One Hour Workouts by Scott Molina, Mark Newton and Michael Jacques
One Hour Workouts is a great solution for a hectic day. You don’t need to miss a workout just because you are short on time. Training for a triathlon can be very time consuming but this book focuses on effective workouts whether you are training for a triathlon, or if you are just trying to fit in a quick but balanced workout.
Former pro-triathlete Scott Molina and multi-sport coaches Mark Newton and Michael Jacques have compiled 50 high quality swim, bike and run sessions to complement your current training program. This book is the book you take with you when you only have an hour but you need to focus on a specific area of training. The workouts are divided into three broad themes- base, tempo and speed work. There are workouts for swimming, biking and running under each of these categories.
The workouts are easy to follow and there are helpful tips with each category. They also cover ‘brick’ workouts when training for triathlons. Cross training and strength workouts are also laid out at the end of the book. The explanations for each workout are clear, concise and easy to understand even if you are a beginner. The spiral binding and laminated pages make it easy to take with you to the pool. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their training on a busy schedule but also to any athlete looking for effective workouts

2 kids under 3! Thats where I begin with not having enough time to work out. And having kicked out 2 kids in the past 3 years out of my body has made exercising a whole lot more painful. If I get a chance to work out I have to go by my self and get myself motivated and thats pretty tough as well. This book looks like just the ticket to help me get motivated!
I work 3-4 days a week, each workday is a 13 hour on my feet. Most exercise plans are not very accomodating to this kind of schedule. I squeeze double workouts in on Mondays and Tuesdays. Swim monday morning, bike or run Monday evening, swim or spinning Tuesday morning and a toning class Tuesday evening. Then another run or swim and a toning class on my day off at the end of the week. This book looks great for when my workout schedule doesn’t line up with when the classes at the gym are open.
I have three little ones as well, I also work part time night shifts as a nurse, so between trying to get decent sleep and being the mom I want to be, working out has had its challenges for me. I usually either run, bike, or swim three to four days a week. If I can’t get myself out of bed early enough before the husband leaves for work, I find myself using a double bike stroller that converts to a jogger. I push my two and four year old children during for my runs. When I bike I pull them. It sure makes the runs and biking rides I do alone seem a lot easier after training while pushing or pulling them.
My workouts are few and far between with my two little rug-rats. I would love a workout book – I don’t even know where to start.
You have the best reviews and the most awesome contests! Keep up the great work and thank you!
I commute a total of 2.5 hours every day and work at least 9 hours. I also travel for 2-3 days every other week so I am on the road often. I need workouts that I can take with me on the road and complete when I’m traveling.
Regardless of being active and eating healthy, I have gained 10 lbs in the last year or so and cannot seem to get it off. I mix up my workout and I try to work out 4-5 days, but not alway consistant. My husband keeps telling me that I need more cardio. It’s hard to make that commitment when there is no game plan. This book sounds like a good guide to keep me on track with my busy schedule, taking care of the family, and myself.
Ex-competitive swimmer turned triathlete in 2006. I am an attorney and my wife works full time – no need to comment there, I am pulled at all ends by work. But, the main reason I am short on time is the 2nd and 3rd loves of my live, my daughters. They are 11 & 13 and both competitive in athletics. They both play ASA softball from April to July and August to October and I coach my youngest daughters team as well as her tournament basketball team from October to March. The eldest also plays tournament volleyball. The family is often in different locations on weekends and in 2011, we have only been home on 3 weekends since January 1st. NOT A COMPLAINT! We do it because we enjoy it BUT as most of you know triathlon is addicting and I’m guilty – I need a comprehensive guide like this one written by experts to feed my addiction as I get through this wonderful time in my life.
