A Playlist to Get You Through the Winter

Keeping Indoor Cycling Fun!

Music–sometimes it can carry you through a workout. A spin class or running 5 miles can be torture if the music doesn’t motivate. Studies show that listening to music while working out increases your attitude and helps you work harder. Without getting all technical on you, (beats per minute etc) we have compiled a list of songs that have proven themselves in countless spin classes, hour long sessions on a bike trainer, and running outside or on a treadmill. We know music is personal and some of these songs we would only listen to during a workout. Trust us, we don’t clean the house or relax to Eminem, but when it comes to getting our blood pumping, these do the trick. If you find it difficult to get motivated to do a good indoor cycling session, tell yourself: this session is  just for 10 songs, or 12 songs–and don’t think about the time!

Another good source for specific spin class play lists can be found at  Denise Druce’s website. She compiles lists for holidays and has theme days. Check it out, they are fun! Here is our playlist from Winter 2010 and  here is a list of spinning terms if you are unfamiliar with them.

Our playslist is separated into categories-:

  • Intervals: these have a steady beat and are work for keeping a good pace and then pushing it on the chorus. A lot of the songs also work well for going a little slower then standing or sprinting when it speeds up.  Switch it up and go from climbs to sprints or jumps (standing up for 8-16 counts, then sitting down for 8-16 counts.)
  • Sprints: These songs have a little faster beat -Take the resistance off; increase your cadence and keep it steady.
  • Climbs: Increase the resistance on your trainer or spin bike. Dig deep and push it up the hills.
  • Cool Down: These songs are appropriate at the end of the workout. Take off the resistance. Spin it out or take it easy.

So look it over!  Some may look scary and if that is an issue, clean versions can be down loaded.  Check them out and perhaps you will discover an old favorite or something new. Enjoy! Songs are  listed first, then artist.

  1. Thanks for the mention! I just added the following information to my cycle class playlist page.

My Cycle Playlists Are Now on ‘Ping”!

I have found a better way to share music with you. From now on, you will find my cycle and yoga playlists on iTunes Ping. They call it a social network for music.

Just go to iTunes and click on ‘Ping’. Register for a free account, search for my name, Denise Druce and find all of my new stuff! You can purchase the entire playlist, or just the songs you want, or just steal ideas. Then add your own playlists to share.

  6. Have to agree with Rich-80′s rock and some of the various bands’ newer stuff in later years. Love Def Leppard…Go and Rocket!! Reo Speedwagon, Led Zeppelin, anything that rocks! (are we hinting at our ages?!!!) Plus have to throw in some country Big and Rich!

    Keep on Rockin!!!!!

  7. Without a doubt most people find music highly motivating while doing indoor cycling. However, if you can’t attend a class and are working out alone why not consider using an indoor cycle training video. Some videos come with music and some have no music track so you can play your favorite tunes in the background. Either way, the combination of music and video is likely to make your indoor cycling workout more fun, as well as motivating and structured.
