Have you ever thought you might want to try a spinning class but have been overwhelmed with thoughts about sweaty people–close together–riding bikes and no way out? Well, here are some tips to help you gain a new appreciation and maybe even a love for a fabulous workout!
First of all, a spin class is a great way to stay in bike shape throughout the winter. Check out a couple gyms that offer spin classes with times that fit into your schedule. If you need child care, many gyms offer this, so no excuses! Ask around! Chances are there are people you know who can recommend places to try. Once you have found a place to go, here are a few things to get you started:
- Arrive 15-20 minutes early. Often these classes fill up fast and there are a limited amount of bikes, so be there early enough to claim a bike and be on the class list if there is one.
- Before class begins is the time to adjust the saddle height and handle bar height to fit you. Since you are new at this, ask the instructor to help you make the adjustments on the bike so it will fit you. It will make a huge difference in your comfort.
- Bring a towel and water bottle (you WILL need these.) Some gyms may offer towels, but bring your own just in case. Remember to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the workout.
- Wear comfortable workout clothes. Bike shorts with padding can be great to avoid “saddle sores.”
- It is okay to wear your regular workout shoes because most bikes are also fitted with toe cages to keep your feet secure. Clip shoes are often worn by those who regularly spin because you can use a push/pull action to make your pedal strokes more efficient. You may want them later, but they aren’t necessary from the beginning.
- The instructors will lead you through various workouts. Don’t be discouraged after your first class if you don’t know what all the terms are. Keep going and you will get it.
- GO AT YOUR OWN PACE until you become more comfortable with the bike. What’s great about a spin class is that you get to control how hard you push. Do it for yourself and don’t worry because your neighbor isn’t concerned with how hard or fast you go. Get inside your head and concentrate on the music; it will push you through. You are there for a good workout, so make it count. You should feel tired after class and you’ll know you’ve worked had. Have fun and the more you go, the better you will feel. Ride on!

Wish that I’d known all this before I took my first spin class. I wanted to go to one so bad and I didn’t have the guts to go until my friend dragged me along one time. Now, I’m hooked!
Sometimes it takes a friend to get us into it. Don’t give up if the first time is hard. It will always be as hard as you want it to be but when you look in the mirror, you’ll know why you do it.
I love spin classes because you can do them in the winter. They’re a great workout without the impact of running.
