I think the painted bike lanes are a significant improvement but if they are separated by some extra barrier to keep moving and parked cars out that would be even better. This is especially true for commuters. I think this is a downtown solution. When I am on a training ride trying to put in a lot of miles fast I like the freedom that a painted bike lane provides. The painted bike lane alerts cars and gives me some space and that seems sufficient. Downtown is a different story. I really like the idea of a separated bike lane downtown.
